JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

General Description:
To guide software design and development for CPB’s custom applications including customization of COTS systems. Provide support and maintenance of CPB systems, internal staff, as well as external users in the public broadcasting community, ensuring that both user business needs and CPB’s Information Technology strategy are aligned with the procurement and development of software packages.
 
Specific Duties:
  • ·         Acts as a a project manager, define requirements, architect, build, and implement, and/or integrate software applications of varying complexity, languages, and platforms for use by internal CPB staff, as well as by external members of the public broadcasting community.
  • ·         Familiarity with the full “life cycle” and possess the ability to work with the business units to define requirements and turn them into code.
  • Expert level understanding of web technologies with an emphasis on data security.
  • Strong familiarity with systems and infrastructure.
  • ·         Experience with software engineering best practices (code reviews, unit testing, design docs, etc).
  • ·         Demonstrated ability to master any programming domain.
  • ·         Work closely with others to design new products and solve existing challenges.
  • ·         Identify and evaluate various software platforms based on business requirements.
  • ·         Expertise with databases, primarily MS SQL based.
  • ·         Develops and maintains all required technical documentation ensuring that it meets established standards and formats.
  • Rapidly troubleshoots service outages using experience and other available resources.
  • Assists with the evaluation and purchase of database services and/or products.
  • ·         Trains and supports application users, both internal and external, providing proactive customer service and resolution of issues related to database and software problems. 
  • ·         Prepares and provides regular reports on the status of projects to keep both supervisor and users apprised of progress and any issues relative to project completion.   
  • ·         Maintains up-to-date detailed documentation.
  • ·         Keeps abreast of trends in applications, software, and database technologies and/or platforms and continues to enhance knowledge and expertise.
  • ·         Effectively communicates technical information to Engineering and Network Operations staff.
  • ·         Provides limited non-working hours emergency support duty. This includes responding to emergency requests, determining severity and solving the problem as best as possible.

We're looking for a full-time sysadmin to help manage our day-to-day operations. We have a part-time network/system architect working for us currently but we're growing and we need someone here full-time.

We run a mix of Linux (CentOS) and FreeBSD on our servers, Nagios for monitoring, MySQL and postgre for databases, FreeSWITCH, Kamailio, and Asterisk for call routing. Authentication is done with LDAP. We run mostly Dell PowerEdge and IBM BladeCenter eServers. We maintain an office Jabber server, webservers for internal staff tools, an RoR frontend for customers, and a few other knick-nacks.

Previous experience in a small business environment is preferred. You should be ready to work in an environment with changing deadlines and requirements.

Duties include:

- Provisioning new servers, maintaining existing ones

- Exploring options for new technologies

- Monitoring various services and responding to critical alerts

- Working with department heads for specific server builds

- Writing documentation for various processes and hardware

- Researching, installing, and maintaining specific software as needed

- Create and maintain backups of critical services

Salary is $30,000-60,000/year DOE.
